About the Festival

OWU Hispanic Film Festival is a yearly educational film event, aimed to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and understanding by selecting films from different countries in Spain and Latin America. It is organized by Dr. Eva Paris Huesca, Director of Film Studies Program and Associate Professor of Spanish, and funded by by WCSA, the Film Studies Program and the Department of World Languages and Cultures. The theme of this year's film festival is "New Beginnings."

“These movies explore issues that are currently affecting individuals and communities in Latin America. We witness the struggle of a Mexican family to find financial stability in a different country that speaks a different language; we live through the hopes of many Chileans for the adoption of a new constitution that will be grounded on equal rights for everyone; and we experience the ongoing class oppression suffered by the Afro Dominican community,” Dr. Paris-Huesca said. “A new beginning is on the horizon. For some, it seems like a dream, not quite tangible, but for it is clearly one that is worth pursuing and fighting for.” Eva Paris-Huesca, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish and director of the Film Studies Program.

The festival also aims to recognize and promote the development and understanding of a Hispanic cinema that is rich and plural. This festival continues OWU´s efforts to offer cultural and academic events that are integral to a liberal arts education and that contribute to the general mission of building a campus culture that values every form of diversity.

Screening will take place on the main campus of OWU, in R.W. Corns Building #312, in Delaware, Ohio. Three international award-winning films will be shown. All of them are in Spanish, but English subtitles will be accompanied.

Several screenings will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session with guest artists via zoom. The Q&A sessions will be in English. Additionally, through the festival website students will have access to resources in English, such as interviews with the directors, movie reviews by renowned critics, and movie guides that can be used for credit or extra in specific academic courses.
